Do I have mice in my walls?

The idea that mice are crawling through your walls, chewing through wires and insulation, is enough to make anyone paranoid. Unfortunately, due to their ability to squeeze through incredibly small spaces, mice do often find their way inside of walls. Some signs that you might have mice living in your walls include:

  • Strange Sounds - Mice are nocturnal, so you might hear them moving around in the walls at night. The sounds often made by mice in walls include scratching, scurrying, squeaking, and gnawing.

  • Unpleasant Odors - The presence of mice inside walls is sometimes accompanied by a musty or ammonia-like smell. Mice might also die inside of walls, creating a truly foul stench.

  • Gnaw Marks - Mice have a constant need to gnaw on things to keep their teeth from growing too long. If you find gnaw marks on walls, electrical wiring, or wooden surfaces, it could be a sign that mice are living in your walls.

  • Nesting Materials - Mice build their nests using materials like paper, fabric, and insulation. If you find bundles of shredded materials in hidden corners or in your insulation, it could be a sign of mouse activity in your home.

  • Droppings - Mouse droppings are small, pellet-like, and dark brown. Check for these droppings in areas where mice are likely to travel, such as along baseboards, in corners, or near food sources.

  • Strange Pet Behavior - Cats and dogs may exhibit unusual behavior, such as pawing or scratching at walls, if they sense the presence of mice. If your pets are acting strangely, it might be time to call a local pest control company.
